Lantern shortlisted for the Michael Marks Award
Lantern has been shortlisted for the 2019 Michael Marks Award, to be announced at the British Library on 10th December.
The judges commented, 'In this assured debut, wild garlic, wych elm, silver birch and waterlily are gently held up to and treasured by an elegiac, reliquary light. Hewitt locates and praises the heavenly in the earthy with a skilful lyric softness and a freely roaming eye, extending lithe fibres of observation into a mineral wealth of expression. His work pleads mercy for the fading sylvan scene in a register that borrows from Christopher Smart and Fiona Benson, but is ultimately only his own.'
